Unlike some other martial arts, Haedong Gumdo doesn't require any heavy equipment. A beginner student only needs a set of Dobok (uniform) and a Mokgum (wooden sword).
Dobok (Uniform)
All Gumdo members should wear a Dobok set during classes as it is the official uniform of Korea Haedong Gumdo Association and World Haedong Gumdo Federation.
But under exceptional weather and temperature condition like sizzling hot summer, students can wear a more convenient T-shirt instead of wearing official uniform.
Belts
As a beginner, the student starts with wearing a white belt and you change your belt colour along with the student's level till the person gets a black belt. Students keep one colour belt for 3 months (in condition that they have almost fully attended all the classes) and if they pass the promotion test, they can a get higher level belt, The higher level belts are Yellow, Blue, Red, and Red & Black.
Once students get the 1st degree black belt, students don't change the belt colour but can be promoted to a higher level after their Dan (black belt) test. For the material and required time for a higher degree, refer to the 'Gumdo System' page.
Students don't need to buy colour belts. The belts are offered by attending Haedong Gumdo School.
Mokum (Wooden sword)
A Mokum is the very basic tool in Gumdo practice as it is used all the time during class. So we can say that a wooden sword is essential equipment in Gumdo practice.
Jukdo (Bamboo sword)
A Jukdo - bamboo sword - is used for predefined fighting and other Gumdo exercises.
Thus, unlike Japanese style Kendo (Kendo is Japanese name of Gumdo), a bamboo sword is optional in Haedong Gumdo in the beginning. It is not so oftenly used in the beginning, but when the level becomes higher, it may be used more often.
Real sword
Adult black belts are allowed to use a real sword. There are many different kinds of real sword such as Samgak-do, Yookgak-do, Multi-purpose sword and with different size and weight.
A real sword is used for cutting practice and real Gumdo technique exercises.
Sword bag (case)
To bring swords, students need a sword bag. Normally we bring swords in a fabric sword case. The sword case is coming with a wooden sword or a real sword. So students don't need to buy the sword case separately.
